To help you fully understand what proofreading is, I have compiled a list of what it involves.
So, what is proofreading?
- Correcting any spelling, punctuation and grammar errors.
- Checking all the factual content of a piece of writing is correct. So, I check such things as URLs, dates, names and places.
- Checking the consistency of your writing. I do this by using a style guide, style guides are used to check such things as dates, titles and numbers are all presented consistently throughout your document. I am familiar with The Oxford Style Guide and The Chicago Manual of Style. I can also adapt to any other available published style guide or alternatively an in-house style guide.
- Checking that the correct font, font sizes and line spacing are consistently used throughout your document/documents.
- Checking that page numbers, headings, etc, are displayed in a consistent manner.
- Checking that illustrations match up with their labels or captions.
